Tokyo Century will build a 15.6MW/64.38MWh grid-scale battery storage facility in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture.
In a statement dated April 8, 2025, the company said the asset will be developed by Nagasaki Unekari Chikuden LLC. It will be Tokyo Century’s first grid-scale storage facility with a 100% economic interest and the first known unsubsidized BESS project for the company to be involved in.
Commercial operation of the Nagasaki Unekari power storage station is expected to begin in FY2028.
Tokyo Century’s “Midterm Management Plan 2027” lists battery storage as one of its key components, with a target of developing 300MW of standalone assets as soon as possible.
Separately from the Nagasaki Unekari project, Tokyo Century disclosed investments in two other BESS projects: the 11MW/23MWh Senri Power Storage Station it plans to commission in FY2025 jointly with Osaka Gas and Itochu and a 20MW/79MWh facility in Hokkaido it plans to commission jointly with JFE Engineering in FY2027.
On a more strategic level, it acquired 5% of TESS Holdings as part of a broader renewables-focused alliance and invested in a battery storage-focused fund established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as a limited partner.
