Vena Energy-affiliated Japan Wind Energy launched the environmental impact assessment process for its up to 138.6MW Iwaki-Yuwa onshore wind project in Yurihonjo and Akita cities, Akita Prefecture.

According to a primary environmental impact consideration document submitted to METI and relevant local governments on May 12, 2026, the company is evaluating several configuration options ranging from 136MW to 138.6MW depending on turbine size, across a 1,024ha site. It has not provided an exact project timeline, but said that construction is expected to take 32 months, with commercial operations commencing in the 33rd month.

Other projects undergoing environmental impact assessment in the area include Cosmo Eco Power’s up to 100MW Akita Yurihonjo Wind Farm, which began the process in March 2025, and Renova’s 64MW to 105.6MW Yurihonjo Iwaki, which reached the methodology stage in September 2025.

Several smaller onshore wind assets already operate in the vicinity, including HSE-affiliated 9.95MW Akita Kunimiyama No. 1 and 7.48MW Akita Kunimiyama No. 2 power plants commissioned in December 2013 and March 2015, respectively, and Akita Wind Power Kenkyusho’s 6.8MW Akita Araya Wind Farm, which came online in March 2023.

Vena Energy Group currently operates three onshore wind power plants in Japan. The first, 7.5MW Reihoku in Kumamoto Prefecture was commissioned in June 2021. The 36MW Nakasato in Aomori Prefecture and the 7.5MW Nakaura in Nagasaki Prefecture followed in April 2022 and May 2025. The company also recently completed environmental impact assessments for the 30MW Kagoshima Koriyama and a 50MW project in Shimane Prefecture.
