Keiyo Gas began commercial operation of its first domestic grid-scale battery storage asset, a 2MW/8MWh project in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture, on October 1, 2026, the company announced on October 5, 2026.
According to the statement, the facility is owned by the special purpose company (SPC) KG BESS LLC, which Keiyo Gas established jointly with its real estate unit Keiyo Gas Fudosan. Sun Village developed and built the asset. Marubeni Power Retail serves as its aggregator.
Prior to the Isesaki project, the group invested in its first grid-scale battery storage asset overall, the 200MW/521.4MWh Pintail project in the United States, which is expected to come online in 2026.
Keiyo Gas follows other gas companies such as Toho Gas, Shizuoka Gas, and Osaka Gas in entering grid-scale battery storage in Japan. Tokyo Gas also expanded into the sector but focuses on aggregating and tolling third-party assets. Saibu Gas signed a memorandum of understanding with Fukuoka Bank to consider joint development.
The Chiba-based gas company has also been active in renewable generation. METI data shows its unit Keiyo Gas Energy Solution held 29 solar and hydropower plants totaling 39.04MW operating under the feed-in-tariff (FIT) scheme as of the end of August 2026. The group also set up an SPC to build about 50 low-voltage solar projects with a combined capacity of approximately 5MWDC for a PPA with TG Octopus Energy.
