HEXA Energy Services signed a 20-year tolling agreement with Tokyo Gas for a 49.7MW/202.1MWh grid-scale battery storage project it is developing in Fukushima Prefecture, the company announced on July 28, 2026.
According to the statement, HEXA Energy Services will own and maintain the facility, while Tokyo Gas will have the right to participate with the asset in the markets. The approximately four-hour project is scheduled to begin commercial operation in FY2029. Further details including its exact location were not disclosed.
The project adds to the developer’s portfolio of one operational and 12 under-development assets backed by long-term decarbonization auction contracts. In FY2023, HEXA Energy Services secured support for 11 projects including the 30MW/130.4MWh Tagawa Power Storage Station, which became the first asset under the scheme to reach commercial operation. In FY2025, it won contracts for two six-hour-plus non-lithium-ion projects.
Tokyo Gas is the largest grid-scale battery storage toller in Japan by disclosed capacity. It previously contracted projects being developed by Eku Energy, Renova, Equis, HD Renewable Energy, CHC Japan, and Bison Energy.
