Hokkaido Clean Energy Chikuden LLC, a special purpose company (SPC) funded by six domestic investors, commissioned the 10.13MW/29.97MWh Hokkaido Ishikari City Power Storage Station in Ishikari City, Hokkaido, Kyuden Mirai Energy announced on September 10, 2026.
According to the statement, the asset began commercial operation on August 1, 2026. It uses GS Yuasa battery systems.
In addition to the Kyushu Electric Power subsidiary, which is registered as the SPC’s representative member, Yonden Engineering, Asunaro Aoki Construction, WWB, Fuyo General Lease, and Mitsubishi Electric also hold economic interest in the project. The companies did not disclose their ownership shares.
Corporate registry records obtained by Japan Energy Hub show the SPC was established in June 2023, with WWB serving as its representative member until Kyuden Mirai Energy replaced it in June 2026.
Data from the Sustainable Open Innovation Initiative (SII), which administers METI’s grid-scale battery storage subsidies, suggests the asset is the Hokkaido project for which WWB, Yonden Engineering, Asunaro Aoki Construction, and Mitsubishi Electric were awarded about 1.03 billion yen under the FY2022 supplementary budget round.
The subsidy application results were released in April 2023, less than two months before the SPC’s incorporation. However, the scheme’s rules required projects to be completed by February 16, 2024. Japan Energy Hub has reached out to the companies involved to confirm whether the project forwent the subsidy or whether the deadline has been extended.
WWB, Yonden Engineering, and Asunaro Aoki Construction separately secured an approximately 1.05 billion yen subsidy under the scheme’s FY2024 round jointly with JR East, JR-EAST Energy Development, Japan Green Investment Corporation for Carbon Neutrality, Chubuplant Service, Mitsubishi Research Institute, and GS Yuasa for a 10MW/30MWh project that is scheduled to be completed in Sapporo City, Hokkaido, in 2027.
