Getworks partnered with Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions and Nippon Paper Industries to develop a containerized data center at the paper manufacturer’s former mill in Kushiro City, Hokkaido, the company announced on November 5, 2026.
According to the statement, the data center’s first 6MW is expected to come online in FY2026, with capacity expanding to 40MW in September 2027. Getworks and Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions see the site as having potential for up to 150MW and will consider building gas-fired and other power plants for further expansion.
The project is being coordinated by Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions, which will also handle engineering and construction of foundations and utilities-related facilities. Getworks is in charge of designing the data center and will operate it when complete. The paper manufacturer will provide the land and supply power using the site’s existing generation and receiving equipment.
Nippon Paper Industries ended paper production at Kushiro Mill in 2021 but continues to power at the site through its subsidiary Nippon Paper Kushiro Energy using an 88MW coal and biomass co-fired plant.
The project is the first under a September 2026 partnership that Getworks and Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions formed to develop containerized data centers at former factory sites and other idle land with existing power infrastructure. The Tokyo Gas group has also tied up with Hitachi, Brookfield Japan, and Hartree Partners Singapore and with CBRE and LCDJ on assets with onsite generation.
