au Renewable Energy, KDDI, TEPCO Holdings, and ENERES will work toward commissioning the former’s first grid-scale battery project in October 2025, the companies said in a statement. Construction work on the 1.999MW/5.608MWh facility in Tochigi Prefecture is expected to start this December.
The 324-square meter battery storage facility will be located within the KDDI Oyama Network Center in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, which is owned by au Renewable Energy’s majority owner’s parent au Energy Holdings’ parent KDDI. According to The Nikkei Business Publishing’s Mega Solar Business, the project will use GS Yuasa ternary (NCM) lithium-ion batteries and Meidensha-made inverters.
According to the four companies’ joint statement, they plan to monetize the project through the balancing and capacity markets among other ways. The project also received a 343 million yen (2.17 million USD) subsidy from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
ENERES will be in charge of power trading and controlling the batteries. TEPCO Holdings will utilize its grid operations and battery-related know-how to support the project’s design and maintenance.
By partnering on this project, the four companies hope to gain further knowledge related to topics ranging from power trading all the way to operating large-scale battery storage facilities.
