Chubu Electric Power Miraiz will supply Merck KGaA’s Japan subsidiary Merck Electronics with power procured from solar power plants to be newly constructed in Shizuoka and Mie prefectures by undisclosed generators, the electronics manufacturer announced on August 27, 2024.
The power plants, some of which will be agrisolar, will total 2.7MW and are expected to gradually commission starting from this fiscal year. Once all of the power plants are operational, they are expected to generate approximately 2.86GWh per year and account for approximately 30% of Merck’s semiconductor R&D and production-related power consumption in Japan.
Merck plans to use the power at its Shizuoka Branch in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, which is already partially powered using solar panels installed within its premises. The company expects an annual reduction of CO2 emissions by approximately 1,315 tons as a result of the PPA.
According to the Japan Energy Hub PPA module, this is Merck Electronics’ first disclosed PPA. Chubu Electric Power Miraiz, on the other hand, has disclosed its involvement in over 15 PPAs so far.
