On February 27, 2025, Chubu Electric Power Miraiz started supplying power to Sumitomo Group’s rubber products manufacturer Sumitomo Riko and wiring harness manufacturer Sumitomo Wiring Systems through a 20-year multi-offtaker off-site PPA.
Once fully operational, the PPA will supply power from solar power plants with a combined 6.8MW capacity to Sumitomo Riko’s Komaki Headquarters/Factory in Aichi Prefecture, Matsusaka Works in Mie Prefecture, and Sumitomo Wiring Systems’ Suzuka Factory in Mie Prefecture. The 8.2GWh expected annual generation will be split equally between the two companies.
Chubu Electric Power Miraiz arranged the deal and serves as the retailer sitting between the power plants and the offtakers. According to its statement, the PPA involves newly built assets in Mie and Nagano prefectures. The company did not disclose the number power plants, their ownership, and the expected commissioning timeline.
The Japan Energy Hub PPA database shows that while Sumitomo Wiring Systems, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries, has not directly disclosed signing a PPA in the past, its parent inked a 4.55MW deal with Kansai Electric Power at the beginning of this month. For Sumitomo Riko, also partially owned by Sumitomo Electric Industries, this is the first off-site PPA.
Chubu Electric Power Miraiz has disclosed over 25 deals to date including a number of other multi-offtaker deals such as its virtual PPA involving the soon-to-be-repowered Aoyama Kogen Wind Farm and a 15-offtaker hybrid on-/off-site PPA in Shizuoka Prefecture.
