On September 12, 2024, CyrusOne KEP, a joint venture between Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) and the US-based global data center operator CyrusOne, broke ground on its first project: the hyperscale CyrusOne KEP OSK1 data center in Keihanna Science City in the Kansai TSO area.
The CyrusOne KEP OSK1 data center will consist of a single building with six 8MW halls, providing a total of 48MW IT capacity when fully operational. It will enter into service in three phases with the first 16MW of IT capacity expected to become operational by the first quarter of 2028.
The 50:50 joint venture, which was first announced in May 2023, aims to invest 1 trillion yen over the next decade into developing data centers totaling 900MW of incoming power (600MW of IT capacity) in the Kansai and Tokyo areas.
According to Eric Schwartz, the CEO of CyrusOne, “CyrusOne KEP combines CyrusOne’s deep experience in data center design and operation with KEPCO’s immaculate track record for delivering power reliably and sustainably throughout Kansai over many decades, creating a unique partnership that simultaneously optimizes digital and power infrastructure.”
A few months after the CyrusOne KEP joint venture was announced, NTT Global Data Centers and TEPCO Power Grid announced a similar joint venture, which will start by developing a 50MW (IT capacity) data center in Chiba Prefecture.
