Eku Energy Japan began operating Kamitonno Power Storage Station, a 2MW/8MWh grid-scale battery storage project in Nogata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, that it acquired from NTT Anode Energy, the company announced on April 22, 2026.
According to the statement, Eku Energy is optimizing trading in-house. Kamitonno Power Storage Station is the company’s first operational facility in Japan and its first disclosed merchant project in the country.
NTT Anode Energy developed and built the project under its turnkey grid-scale battery storage service launched in July 2025. The company will remain in charge of operations and maintenance (O&M).
Eku Energy broke ground on its first project in Japan, the 30MW/120MWh Hirohara Energy Storage Plant in Miyazaki Prefecture, in 2024. The MUFG Bank-financed asset is expected to be commissioned in early 2027 and operate under a tolling agreement with Tokyo Gas. The company is also developing a 150MW/600MWh facility in Okayama Prefecture backed by a capacity contract secured in the second long-term decarbonization auction.
In addition to developing projects for third parties, NTT Anode Energy has also been building out its own portfolio of grid-scale battery storage assets. It commissioned its 10th facility in March 2026, reaching 18.5MW/81.5MWh in total operational capacity. By FY2028, it plans to build 13 more, including 11 high-voltage and two extra high-voltage.
