Eurus Energy Holdings’ group company Eurus Energy Odanosawa LLC started construction work related to the repowering and expansion of Eurus Odanosawa Wind Farm on September 2, 2024, the largest wind project developer in Japan announced.

Once repowered and expanded, the power plant in Higashidoori Village, Aomori Prefecture, will have a nameplate capacity of 43MW or over three times the current 13MW. The current power plant, which was commissioned in October 2004, is expected to go out of service in July 2025 with the new “Odanosawa Wind Farm I & II” being expected to commission about two years later, in March 2027.

Kandenko will handle the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction work that will involve the removal of the current power plant’s 10 1.3MW Bonus (now Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy) and the installation of 10 4.3MW Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy wind turbines.

Construction work on the expansion part of the project, which will consist of seven of the 10 new turbines, began on September 2, 2024. At the same time, preparatory construction work on the three remaining turbines, which will be used to replace the existing 10, started. Removal of the existing turbines is expected to start in April 2025.

Formerly a 60:40 joint venture between Toyota Tsusho and TEPCO, Eurus Energy is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the latter. It currently has two other wind projects in Aomori that are under construction, both in Higashidoori Village: the 19.25MW Eurus Shitsukari Wind Farm and the 32.5MW Eurus Iwaya Wind Farm.

Most recently, it commissioned the Eurus Sandaimyojin Wind Farm, a 46MW wind power plant in Fukushima Prefecture.

Correction (September 6, 2024): An earlier version of this story described Eurus Energy as a 60:40 joint venture between Toyota Tsusho and TEPCO. The company is now wholly owned by Toyota Tsusho, which acquired TEPCO’s 40% stake in August 2022.
