Green Energy Frontier commissioned a 2MW solar power plant on the rooftop of Tokyo Narita Airport’s newly constructed Cargo Building 8, the 50:50 joint venture between the airport’s operator Narita International Airport Corporation and Tokyo Gas announced on October 17, 2024.

Power generated at the power plant will be supplied to the building through an on-site PPA.

Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas, was in charge of the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). It will also be in charge of the power plant’s maintenance going forward. The plan to construct the power plant was first announced in October 2023 with commissioning originally scheduled for July 2024.

Green Energy Frontier was established in April 2023 to help with Narita Airport’s decarbonization. The company plans to utilize the estimated 200ha of land around runways, etc. and rooftop space available at the airport to develop 180MW of solar capacity by the end of FY2045 including 75MW by the end of FY2030. The power plant on Cargo Building 8’s rooftop is the first operational power plant in the portfolio and the first megasolar one at the airport.
