Tokyo Electric Generation submits Himekawa hydro power plant redevelopment EIA, targets 2034 COD

On November 26, 2024, Tokyo Electric Generation submitted a draft of the environmental impact assessment for its Himekawa hydro power plant redevelopment project. The company plans to replace Himekawa No. 7 Power Plant’s 23.3MW Unit 1 with Himekawa No. 8 Power Plant, which will comprise of one 38.7MW unit.

According to the draft environmental impact assessment, Tokyo Electric Generation plans to start construction work on the project that will increase the combined output of the power plants (No. 7 and No. 8) by 15.4MW from 46.6MW to 62.0MW is expected to start in 2027 and take approximately seven years. Commissioning of the Himekawa No. 8 Power Plant is planned for April 2034.

Himekawa No. 7 Power Plant, located in the Tohoku TSO area, was commissioned in January 1955 with two 23.3MW units. It is, by a wide margin, the largest of Tokyo Electric Generation’s 79 hydroelectric power plants totaling 193MW.
