Honda signed its first virtual PPA in Japan, involving Invenergy’s group company Rusutsu Wind LLC’s 63MW Rusutsu Wind Energy Center in Hokkaido, the automaker announced on September 27, 2024.

As part of the deal, Honda will purchase renewable energy certificates generated at the power plant. While Rusutsu Wind LLC will sell the generated power in the wholesale market and Honda buy the power it will consume from its retailer, the two companies will be settling the difference between the agreed upon fixed PPA price and the wholesale market price.

The PPA is scheduled to come into effect in September 2025.

Rusutsu Wind Energy Center, located approximately 60km southwest of Sapporo City, Hokkaido, is Invenergy’s first onshore wind project in Japan. The power plant, consisting of 15 4.2MW GE Vernova turbines, was commissioned in March of this year.

According to the Japan Energy Hub PPA database, Honda previously disclosed two on-site PPAs in Japan, one of them being a 7MW contract with Tokyo Gas Engineering.
