Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions commissioned a 1.8MW solar power plant at Honda’s Hosoe Outboard Motor Factory in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and a 20MWh BESS at the company’s Kumamoto Factory in Otsu Town, Kumamoto Prefecture, as part of its on-site PPAs with the automaker, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas announced on November 22, 2024.
According to the statement, Honda also agreed to expand the Kumamoto PPA with additional 2MW of solar and the Hosoe PPA with a 2MWh BESS, both to be commissioned in FY2025.
With that, once fully operational, Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions will have installed a total of 9.3MW of solar at Honda’s Kumamoto Factory including 5MW of rooftop (commissioned in FY2021 and FY2023) and 4.3MW of carports (FY2022, FY2024, and FY2025). While the existing solar systems were supplied by Next Energy & Resources, the carports to be installed next fiscal year will be supplied by Nisso Engineering.
The 1.8MW of solar at the Hosoe Factory, including 900kW of rooftop and 900kW of carports, was supplied by Kyowa Holdings.
GS Yuasa and Fuji Electric supplied the 10 2MWh battery systems installed at the Kumamoto Factory while the former will supply the 2MWh system for the Hosoe Factory.
The Japan Energy Hub PPA database shows that in addition to PPAs with Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions, Honda also signed an on-site PPA with Sumitomo Mitsui Construction and a virtual PPA with Invergy’s Rusutsu Wind.
As part of the former, Sumitomo Mitsui Construction installed a floating solar power plant on a retention pond within Honda’s premises in Kumamoto. As part of the latter, Honda will purchase renewable energy certificates from the 63MW Rusutsu Wind Energy Center starting from September 2025.
