J-POWER and its unit J-Wind signed their third onshore wind virtual PPA with KDDI for Iwaki-Futago Wind Power Plant, a planned 8.4MW project in Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture, the companies announced on April 21, 2026.
According to the statement, construction work on the power plant is scheduled to begin in the first half of FY2026, with commercial operation targeted for January 2029. The project will comprise two 4.2MW turbines.
Under the agreement, KDDI will purchase the non-fossil certificates (NFCs) associated with the power plant’s output while continuing to procure power via its retailer. J-POWER will sell the power generated by Iwaki-Futago in the wholesale market. The project does not appear to be certified under the feed-in-tariff (FIT) or feed-in-premium (FIP) scheme.
The deal follows virtual PPAs for the 19.5MW New Minami Osumi Wind Farm and the 51.6MW Kaminokuni No. 3 Wind Farm the companies signed in December 2024 and March 2025. Both power plants are under construction. They are expected to be commissioned in December 2027 and September 2028, respectively. Once fully operational, KDDI expects the NFC supply from the three contracted assets to offset approximately 16% of emissions from its base stations.
J-POWER Group holds stakes in over 20 operational wind projects with a combined capacity of about 600MW. While most operate under FIT contracts, the company entered the PPA market in December 2022 with an intra-group virtual agreement to build expertise ahead of expanding the model to third-party offtakers.
