On October 28, 2024, J-POWER returned Unit 2 of Nagayama Power Station in the Shikoku TSO area into commercial operation after repowering it from 18.5MW to 19.25MW. The company also plans to repower the power plant’s Unit 1 in 2025.

J-POWER aims to start repowering work on Unit 1 in January 2025 and return the power plant into commercial operation in October of the same year. Once fully repowered, the hydroelectric power plant in Kitagawa Village, Kochi Prefecture, will have a total output of 38.5MW, 750kW more than now and 1.5MW more than prior to Unit 2 repowering.

When announcing the start of Unit 2 repowering work at the end of October 2023, the company said, “J-POWER will comprehensively update the main facilities, such as the water turbine and generators, to improve reliability, to rationalize operations, and to save on labor costs.” “The maximum water intake (flow) will be increased in addition to adopting highly efficient water turbines and generators based on the latest designs,” it continued.

Nagayama Power Station was commissioned over 60 years ago, in July 1960.
