Construction work on Japan Petroleum Exploration’s (JAPEX) first grid-scale battery project commenced this month, the company announced on August 19, 2024. The facility, to be located in the Tokyo TSO area, is expected to be commissioned in the spring of 2025.
According to JAPEX’s statement, the 1.999MW/6MWh JAPEX Mihama Power Storage Station will be located within the premises of JAPEX’s Research Center in Mihama Ward in Chiba City. Like Renewable Japan’s and Sinanen’s projects among others, the development of JAPEX’s first grid-scale battery storage project will be subsidized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
While JAPEX has not disclosed which manufacturers’ lithium-ion batteries and power conditioners it will use, the company revealed JFE Engineering to be the company responsible for EPC.
Once operational, JAPEX plans to use the facility for trading on the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets.
The company, aiming to establish a revenue structure less susceptible to external factors such as oil prices as part of its 2022-2030 plan, views its entry into the battery storage market as a key step in its goal to grow further as a ‘comprehensive energy company.’
