On December 15, 2024, JYS Group’s Joyo Shoji commissioned its first two grid-scale BESS facilities, both 2MW projects in Gunma Prefecture subsidized by Tokyo Prefecture’s FY2023 grid-scale battery introduction subsidy.
Shirokuma Power was in charge of acquiring land for the “Ota City Okakudacho Power Storage System” and “Kiryu City Sakainocho Power Storage System” projects, as well as for their engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). The company will also be in charge of the projects operations and maintenance (O&M).
In addition to the two projects in Gunma, Shirokuma Power is currently working on two more projects owned by JYS Group including a 2 MW facility in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, that was awarded the same Tokyo Metropolitan Government subsidy and scheduled to be commissioned in January 2025, and a 37.5MW project in Hokkaido that was awarded a 20-year fixed capacity payment in Japan’s first long-term decarbonization auction.
Shirokuma Power is developing four other projects using the Tokyo Metropolitan Government subsidy with other partners. Three of those will be located in Gunma Prefecture and one in Tochigi. According to its statement announcing the commissioning of the two assets in Gunma, it is currently developing approximately 2.1GWh of BESS in total.
Six of the seven Shirokuma Power projects awarded the metropolitan government’s subsidy were granted approximately 323 million yen while one was granted approximately 477 million yen.
