JPN ENERGY Integrated System commissioned its first grid-scale battery storage facility and established Kirishima Chikudensho LLC, a joint venture with GreenEnergy&Co and DMM.com, that will own and operate the facility, the company announced on September 10, 2024.
The 8.128MWh/1.99MW battery storage project in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, was first announced in October 2023, targeting March 2024 commissioning. While the actual commissioning date was not disclosed in the recent press release, Nikkei’s Mega Solar Business reported that the facility became operational on June 12, 2024.
Similar to other grid-scale battery projects in Japan, the joint venture plans to use the Kirishima Battery Storage Power Plant for trading in the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets.
The facility uses JPN ENERGY’s own water-cooled lithium iron phosphate batteries. JPN ENERGY will be responsible for the power plants operation and maintenance (O&M) too. The company’s group company RE100 Power will serve as the project’s aggregator and use its EMS for controlling the charing and discharging of the batteries.
JPN ENERGY is looking to further expand its battery business and is currently discussing future projects with relevant stakeholders.
