Kumamoto Prefecture is soliciting proposals for three renewable energy projects related to it having been selected as one of Japan’s ‘Leading Decarbonization Regions’ in November 2023, the prefecture announced on July 11, 2024.
The prefecture is seeking companies that will supply power to a local retailer (a retailer owned by local businesses and municipalities) it is looking to establish as part of its ‘Aso Kumamoto Airport Area RE100 Industrial Area’ project, which, as its name suggests, aims to attract businesses participating in the RE100 scheme to establish presence in industrial areas, such as the Techno Research Park, around the airport.
Developers are being sought for three separate projects:
- 15.696 MW solar power plant and 6 MWh battery storage
- 1.999 MW woody biomass power plant fueled using construction waste materials
- 400kW cogeneration facility using biogas made from commercial food waste and other materials through methane fermentation
Kumamoto Prefecture expects the projects to commission no later than in FY2029 (April 1, 2029, to March 31, 2030). Selected businesses will be provided a subsidy of up to two thirds of project costs of the solar power plant and up to 3/4 of project costs for the battery storage facility and woody biomass power plant.
Businesses are required to submit their proposals by August 1, 2024. Selection results are expected to be announced on August 8, 2024.
