On December 18, 2024, Kuradashi, a food waste reduction company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Growth Market, announced it started considering entry into the grid-scale battery storage business.
“We are considering constructing and operating grid-connected battery storage stations to help expand the use of renewable energy and stabilize the supply and demand of power,” said the company’s statement. “Details of the business model, scheme, and costs to be incurred for starting the business will be disclosed as soon as they are decided,” it continued.
The company plans to launch a subsidiary that will be in charge of developing the renewable energy business on January 1, 2025.
Kuradashi, founded in 2014, primarily operates an online marketplace for still-edible food that would otherwise be thrown away. If it proceeds with the plan to develop grid-scale BESS facilities, it would be its first foray into the energy industry.
