Kyuden Mirai Energy held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 4.99MW geothermal Kirishima Eboshidake Binary Power Plant in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, on October 9, 2026, the company announced on the same day.
The Kyushu Electric Power unit first announced the project in June 2024, planning to bring it online by the end of FY2026. It began preparatory works on October 23, 2024, and now expects to start commercial operation of the asset in FY2028. The utility had drilled a survey well at the site in 1998.
Once operational, the power plant is expected to generate about 32GWh annually. METI data shows the project was certified under the feed-in-premium (FIP) scheme in FY2025, when newly built geothermal assets under 15MW were offered a strike price of 40 yen per kWh for 15 years.
While the company did not disclose the asset’s planned business model, it might sell the output under corporate PPAs as it does with several older geothermal power plants in its portfolio.
Kirishima Eboshidake Binary Power Plant will be the Kyushu Electric Power Group’s ninth geothermal power plant and Kyuden Mirai Energy’s first newly built asset since it took over the utility’s geothermal business in April 2024. The company is also undergoing the environmental impact assessment process with the 9.5MW-scale Yutsubo Geothermal Power Plant that it targets commissioning within 2030.
