Two Mitsuuroko Green Energy projects in Hokkaido were awarded METI’s FY2024 subsidy for supporting the expansion of renewable energy through introduction of energy storage, the company announced on January 28, 2025.
According to the statement, the two selected projects are Mitsuuroko Hokkaido Kitahiroshima No. 1 Power Storage Station and Mitsuuroko Hokkaido Kitahiroshima No. 2 Power Storage Station. Each of the projects will have power capacity of 1.53MW and storage capacity of 7.83MWh. Both will be located in Kitahiroshima City, Hokkaido.
The batteries will be used for participating in the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets, with Mitsuuroko Green Energy being in charge of trading.
Data released by Sustainable Open Innovation Initiative (SII), the association responsible for implementing the METI subsidy, shows that each of the projects was awarded approximately 162.3 million yen.
Mitsuuroko Green Energy first disclosed its intention to build grid-scale BESS facilities in Kitahiroshima in its 2021 sustainability report. In a press release from February 2022, the company said the projects would use Tesla Megapack batteries. While Mitsuuroko Green Energy was aiming for December 2022 COD at the time, neither of the facilities appears to have been commissioned yet and it has not disclosed revised target COD.
Currently, Mitsuuroko Green Energy has two operational grid-scale BESS projects: the 1.5MW/6MWh Mitsuuroko Aichi Prefecture Tahara Power Storage Station and the 1.53MW/6.14MWh Mitsuuroko Miyagi Prefecture Sendai Power Storage Station. Both of those were commissioned in 2023, in September and December, respectively.
