ID&E Holdings’ Nippon Koei Energy Solutions and Hazama Ando Corporation will jointly develop and operate a 20MW/80MWh BESS facility in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, the companies announced on February 14, 2025.
Nippon Koei Energy Solutions will be in charge of “Nakatsugawa Power Storage Station’s” aggregation and asset management. It will also oversee its electrical construction. Hazama Ando will oversee civil construction work. The two companies expect construction of the project to begin in March 2025 and plan 2028 commissioning for the project.
The facility will be used for trading in the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets. “In the Chubu region in particular, there is a significant shortage of bids in the primary and secondary balancing markets, which require fast response, and this has led to an increase in the importance of storage batteries that can contribute to the stabilization of the power grid,” said the companies’ statement.
Nippon Koei Energy Solutions and Hazama Ando expect the project to be economically viable on its own, without the use of subsidies.
The project will the two companies’ first BESS facility in Japan. It will be owned by Nakatsugawa Chikudensho, a joint venture 50.1% owned by Nippon Koei Energy Solutions and 40.9% owned by Hazama Ando that the companies plan to establish on February 25, 2025.
That said, Nippon Koei Energy Solutions already operates two BESS facilities in Europe including the 50MW/50MWh Tollgate in the UK and 25MW/100MWh Ruien in Belgium. It plans to use the know-how acquired through those projects to grow its domestic BESS business. Nippon Koei Energy Solutions is also involved in the construction of multiple smaller BESS projects in Japan including Renewable Japan’s 2MW/7.8MWh project in Saitama Prefecture as the EPC.
