On December 10, 2024, J-POWER returned the hydroelectric Okamigo Power Plant in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, to commercial service after repowering it from 20MW to 21.3MW.

Repowering work on the power plant in the Chubu TSO area first commissioned in 1971 started in May 2024. According to J-POWER’s statement, “the blade shape of the turbine runner was improved using the latest analysis and design technology, increasing the power output by 1,300 kW … Additionally, the facility was streamlined to improve reliability and reduce the labor required for maintenance work.”

J-POWER has a portfolio of 61 hydroelectric power plants totaling over 8.5GW. More than half of the power plants have been in service since the 1950s and 1960s. As such, J-POWER is in the process of repowering the older assets with Okamigo Power Plant being the eight one to be completed. Recently, the company also repowered Nagayama Unit 2 and Suesawa.
