Seven & i Holdings established a wholly-owned power retail company Seven & i Energy Management on August 1, 2024, the owner of the Seven-Eleven convenience store chain and Ito-Yokado supermarket chain among others announced on August 14, 2024.

Junro Ito, Seven & i Holdings’ vice president and one of its representative directors, was appointed the president of the company, which plans to enter the power retail business in April 2025. By that time, the company will need to obtain a power retail license from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Seven & i Energy Management plans to procure power from renewable generators and supply it to companies within the Seven & i group. The company plans to outsource its balancing operations to Mitsui & Co. Plant Systems.

According to the statement, “by continuing existing [renewable energy-related] initiatives and building a system to procure renewable energy more widely, the group aims to increase its domestic renewable energy ratio to approximately 40% by fiscal 2030.”

In fiscal 2024, Seven & i Holdings expects approximately 10% of its stores’ power consumption to come from renewables. The group has installed solar panels in over 9,000 stores to date and, according to the Japan Energy Hub PPA module, signed at least three off-site corporate PPAs.
