Shikoku Electric Power will decommission Anan Power Station Unit 3 around June 2026 and Sakaide Power Station Unit 3 in the second half of FY2027, the company announced on April 14, 2026. Combined, the units account for 27% of the utility’s operable thermal capacity.
According to the statement, the 450MW oil-fired unit in Anan City, Tokushima Prefecture, has been shut down since January 2026 due to a decrease in utilization and equipment aging. “As there is no prospect of using it in the future, we have proceeded with the necessary procedures and decided to decommission it,” said Shikoku Electric Power.
The unit in Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture, also 450MW, has been using a combination of oil and coke oven gas. The latter has been supplied by an adjacent coking factory, which is scheduled to cease operations in the second half of FY2027. Given the unit’s age and availability of sufficient alternative supply capacity, the utility decided to decommission it instead of switching to oil-only operation following the coke production facility’s closure.
In addition to Unit 3, which was commissioned in 1973, Sakaide Power Station also has a 350MW LNG- and coke oven gas-fired Unit 4 commissioned in 1974 and a pair of LNG-fired units with a combined capacity of 585MW brought online in 2010 and 2016, respectively. Anan Power Station Unit 3 is the plant’s sole remaining unit following the decommissioning of its 125MW Unit 1 and 220MW Unit 2 in 2019 and 450MW Unit 4 in 2023.
The utility’s thermal portfolio also includes the 700MW Tachibanawan Power Station in Anan City and the 750MW Saijo Power Station in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture. While the retirements will temporarily decrease Shikoku Electric Power’s available thermal capacity from 3.29GW to 2.39GW, the company is currently developing the 600MW LNG-fired Sakaide Power Station Unit 5, which is targeted for commissioning in 2032.
