Takeei Corporation is reconsidering its plan to build a 9.99MW biomass power plant in Togane City, Chiba Prefecture, citing challenges in securing a stable fuel supply, the company announced in mid-December 2024.

The company planned to fuel the power plant, which was first announced in 2021 and expected to commission around 2024, using trees that fell during a major typhoon in 2019, as well as local cedars. “However, in the process, it became clear that it would take more time than expected to track down owners and carry out actual work to steadily secure forest timber,” said the company’s statement, also citing additional challenges caused by the 2021 wood shock.

According to the statement, “In light of this situation, we have decided to first work on forest regeneration projects in Chiba Prefecture, prioritize the establishment of a stable fuel supply system, and reconsider the scale and site of the wood biomass power generation business in Chiba Prefecture.”

Takeei currently owns a stake in six operational biomass projects including four in Tohoku (approximately 7MW each) and two in Greater Tokyo (approximately 7MW and 50MW). It provided no specific timeline for the Chiba project’s reconsideration.
