Tesla was awarded a contract to supply batteries for the 134MW/548MWh Maibara-Koto Energy Storage Plant being developed by Orix, the manufacturer announced on February 4, 2025.

The facility in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture, in the Kansai TSO area will use approximately 140 Tesla Megapack units. At the end of November 2024, Toshiba Plant Systems & Services was tasked with its engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC). While at the time, the EPC contractor expected to hand it over in November 2026, the Tesla statement indicates that commissioning is now scheduled for 2027.

Maibara-Koto Energy Storage Plant is the largest of the 30 BESS projects that have been awarded 20-year fixed capacity payment in Japan’s first long-term decarbonization auction held in FY2023. It is also set to become one of Japan’s largest BESS facilities overall.

Separately from the Maibara facility, Orix recently commissioned the 48MW/113MWh Kinokawa Power Storage Plant in Wakayama Prefecture, which it developed jointly with Kansai Electric Power.
