Tokyu Construction commissioned the Sagami Battery Storage Power Station, its first grid-scale battery project, on July 29, 2024. On the same day, the company also announced it partnered with Kansai Electric Power (KEPCO) and Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions (ESS) to conduct a demonstration project of the two companies’ new asset management and smart maintenance support service.
The 1.999 MW/4.064 MWh lithium-ion battery storage facility is located in Sagamihara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, on the premises of Tokyu Construction’s Sagami Factory. It was first announced by Tokyu Corporation in August 2023. Construction work on the facility started in January 2024.
Tokyu Construction plans to use the battery storage power station for trading power on the wholesale, balancing, and capacity markets.
The demonstration project with with KEPCO and Toshiba ESS will last for a year. As part of the project, KEPCO will monitor and collect data from the plant and provide Tokyu Construction with information about the state of the batteries and any required maintenance work. Toshiba ESS will use the data collected by KEPCO to estimate the batteries’ lifespan. The two companies plan to commercialize the solution later this fiscal year (by March 31, 2025).
“We will strive to expand our battery storage business,” said Tokyu Construction Executive Vice President Yoshihiko Suwa at the battery storage power station’s inaugural ceremony.
