Toyota Motor submitted the draft environmental impact assessment for the 30.1MW Tahara Plant No. 2 onshore wind project in Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture, to METI and other stakeholders on September 8, 2026.

According to the document, the automaker plans to install seven 4.3MW turbines within the factory’s premises. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2028, with commercial operation following at the end of March 2031.

The project is expected to replace J-Wind’s existing 1.98MW Tahara Wind Power Plant and 22MW Tahara Rinkai Wind Power Plant, which were commissioned in March 2004 and March 2005, respectively. The single-turbine asset and most of the larger power plant’s turbines have been decommissioned. Both previously operated under feed-in-tariff (FIT) contracts.

J-Wind launched the environmental impact assessment process for the replacement power plant in June 2020, planning to build a 23.98MW to 51.6MW asset at the time. It advanced the project to the methodology stage in January 2021 before transferring it to Toyota Motor in August 2025.

The automaker already operates a separate onshore wind power plant at the factory. It commissioned five of the planned six 4.3MW turbines of the 25.8MW Tahara Plant Wind Power Plant in April 2024. The document does not say whether the No. 2 project will affect the asset’s postponed sixth unit.
