A major Japanese renewable developer West Holdings and Grid, the developer of the battery control solution ReNom Charge, signed a partnership through which they will aim to develop 800MWh of grid-scale battery storage projects in Japan by fiscal 2027 (March 31, 2028), the two companies announced on August 19, 2024.

The partnership will primarily focus on projects with 1.99MW power capacity and 8-10MWh energy capacity. West Holdings will be responsible for developing the projects all the way from finding suitable locations to constructing the battery storage power plants while Grid will be responsible for optimizing the batteries’ operation.

The companies already started working on their first joint battery storage project, a 1.99MW/10MWh facility in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which is expected to be commissioned in March 2025.

Last August, West Holdings signed a similar partnership agreement with Power X, through which it aims to develop 200MWh of battery storage by the spring of 2025. At the end of 2023, the company also announced it will develop and commission a 34MWh battery storage power plant in Akitakata City, Hiroshima Prefecture by October 2025.
