On November 20, 2024, Zero Watt Power acquired an undisclosed majority stake in Sojitz Sawada Power, the operator of Sawada Power Plant on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, the company announced earlier this week. With the power plant operator becoming a consolidated subsidiary of Zero Watt Power, its name was changed to Sawada Power Plant Co., Ltd.

The oil-fired power plant sits on an approximately 4,000 square meter site and has two units. Unit 1, with a capacity of 5.6MW, was commissioned in June 2000, followed by an 8.4MW Unit 2 in June 2005. According to Zero Watt Power’s statement, the power plant supplies approximately 15% of the remote island’s power.

Zero Watt Power will continue to supply power generated at the plant to Tohoku Electric Power Network.

“With the share transfer, we will work use Zero Watt Power’s renewable energy-related knowledge and technology to reduce the burden on the environment by working to significantly reduce CO2 emissions through a shift to biomass fuels in the future,” said Zero Watt Power. No timeline for the power plants conversion was provided.
